(NC)—Getting older doesn't have to mean slowing down. In fact, being physically active is an important part of living a healthy life. Here are some ways to incorporate activity into your daily life.
1. Aim for 30 minutes of activity a day. If you can't do this all at once, try to do 10 minutes of activity three times a day.
2. Research your community facilities and programs to see what's available.
3. Find simple activities that fit your life.
• walk to work or at lunch;
• get off the bus or subway one stop earlier;
• walk on the spot during TV commercials;
• do an extra lap around the perimeter of the grocery store while shopping;
• lift soup cans or bottles of water when walking outside or "on the spot";
• do chair exercises while you're sitting at work or in front of the TV.
4. Find an activity buddy. It's easier to stay motivated with someone else encouraging you.
5. Proactively manage aches and pains – they're not a "normal part of aging." Work with your doctor to help manage pain so you can stay active.
